I donāt usually talk about coding on main, but I really think people would enjoy it more if they were taught what they could do as well as how to code. Like you can build anything. Anything at all you could possibly want. Programming can be a creative medium for the logically minded, and coding classes almost never actually embrace that.
Iāve built so many projects just from silly jokes. Made a whole joke text adventure game about being trapped in an elevator with some game characters. The discord bots I maintain to this day started as āhaha what if [Game NPC] was in our serverā. If an idea strikes me as fun Iāll code it, the same way an artist will draw a silly doodle or a writer will write a funny joke fic. Itās not just a get a job skill, you actively create things with code. So create! And have fun doing it!
I really think thatās the secret to truly enjoying programming. I love it, itās a passion of mine. And itās all because my first teacher set me free to create with it. He would let me expand on assignments however I wanted when I finished early and encouraged exploring what else I could do. If more people taught coding like that, I think there would be so many more who shared my passion for it.

if you can't get something on a computer to work know that you must first reach the depths of mental despair and anguish to appease the fickle computer trickster gods as penance for the hubris of humanity daring to assume we can understand the ways of the computer. and then you can try again and it'll work fine.

also like this is not a defence of parents but I think āand these are kids whose parents thought they were tech literate enough to sign them up for a programming classā is very silly because I think itās pretty easy to forget how much of using a computer is a skill you need to learn. I remember when I was a camp counselor for a summer I had to teach kids how to use scissors and it was a wild experience because I forgot using scissors was a skill you needed to learn. and in the same way when teaching I was not aware I needed to teach students what file pathways were because it was an invisible assumed skill I wasnāt aware other people didnāt have, but I wasnāt like oh christ kids these days and their freaking ipadsā¦. I just like taught them what a file pathway was lol. and then after getting used to windows file explorer after a couple weeks they knew what it was. ta da
#I notice that apple users tend to have less like general knowledge about computers but again itās not catastrophic itās literally fine lol#also I think the assumption that parents would only sign up their kid to a coding class bc they think theyāre a tech wiz is also very silly#but thatās besides the point

Man, this is why I always hated math class.
Khan Academy gave me this easy (or so I thought) problem to solve:
"A factory makes toys that are sold for $10 a piece. The factory has 40 workers, and they each produce 25 toys a day. The factory is open 5 days a week. What is the total value of toys the factory produces in a day?"
I said to myself, okay...
10 times 40 times 25 equals 10,000. That means the factory produces $10,000 worth of value per WORKING day.
10,000 times 5 equals 50,000. And then there are two days per week (the weekend) when no value is produced. So, per week, the total value produced is still only $50,000.
And finally, there are seven days in a full week, so $50,000 divided by 7 equals roughly $7,142.86. That's the total value of toys produced per day. Not "per work day", but "per day", as it specifically says in the problem.
But what does the teacher say as he guides us through it? 10 times 40 times 25 equals 10,000, so the answer is 10,000.
That's it. The end.
He even acknowledges: "So, you might be thinking, 'Hey wait, we didn't use all the information! We didn't use the "five days per week" information!' And yeah, as it turns out, that was information we didn't need."
'As it turns out'?! Are you kidding me right now?! I carefully read the question, precisely calculated exactly what it was asking for, taking all of the provided information into account... and now you're saying I'm supposed to have somehow magically known to ignore one of those pieces of information in order to make it easier for myself?
Just admit that your problem is worded badly, dude. UGH this kind of shit drives me crazy. Why can't people use words clearly >:(
#studyblr#math#mathematics#khan academy#adult studyblr#i legit almost failed a math class once because i read and followed the instructions exactly as they were written#instead of intentionally ignoring some bits to make it easier for myself#but it turned out i was SUPPOSED to ignore those bits. and jump to conclusions.#and assume stuff without having been given any reason to do so.#dude. i do computer programming. you can't just assume the path of least resistance when you code a piece of software.#you have to imagine every possible confusion; mistake; user error; anything that could potentially go wrong#and provide for it in your coding. and test for it. and not leave ANYTHING to chance.#so why is this math class now trying to teach me bad habits -_-#so far i've been liking khan academy okay but this is some bs

So the moment I saw that Elizabeth was Vanessa's mom in the Alive AU I could not help but imagine them being the pettiest shits to each other. Elizabeth suggests Vanessa dyes her hair red? Vanessa dyes her hair, like mentioned in game, rainbow. Why are you so mad, Mom? There's red in there!
At least Gregory and Cassie think it's cool.
Itās very much āFull Time Girlboss, Part Time Tiger Mom with severe insecurities installed by her Fatherā vs āAngsty Teen who learned how to find loopholes in contracts from her Motherā level of petty
But yes, the younger Afton cousins admire Vanessa for her rebelliousness

genuinely one of my fav things ot think abt wrt tadc is like. the technical side of things. like idrk a lot abt computer science but i know a little and also like sci fi so i can follow a little of it and its really cool to think abt. like to me? the reason why abstraction occurs is bc, in the circus, a person is effectively JUST their mind. the mind is in a computer and all the signals its got is being read and interpretted and thats what gets the player model and how the person percieves themself to be standing or smth. and then the computer just sorta puts them somwhere and goes from there. so then abstraction is those signals starting to get jumbled up and jumbled up until the computer cant read it anymore and it just... gives the person a mess of an avatar bc it cant interpret them any other way. and bc the persons mind is all mixed in w computer junk this process kinda... scatters them a bit? and the computer can only send signals to the mind and affect its perception, but once all the computer and the mind are too jumbled up the computer cant put it back together
#idk if this even makes sense#that one fic also was really inspiring to me.... the one titled smth like zooble interrogating caine#i really like how that fic interprets it all#i need to reread it sometime itss been a minute#part of this post is directly influenced by it but afaik that fic didnt discuss the concept of abstraction from a technical sense yet#also that person knows more abt comp sci than i do HAHA im mostly just going off of my psych knowledge and also what ive seen in sci fi stu#and my limited comp sci knowledge from a few computer classes ive had here n there#but ya thats why i think abstraction is permanent. person just... turns into meaningless code#and once its done u cant put it back together#esp cus once the computer cant read ur data all the input it gives the person is fuuuucked#senses lose meaning and stuff#circus discussion

one of my friends is a biologist & i was really amused hearing some of her stories yesterday because they put into context just how believable newt's kaiju drift is as Shit A Biologist Would Do. like my friend has personally met both a guy who got infected with a botfly larva and didn't do anything to remove it (because he just didn't mind), and another guy who identified a tapeworm species by intentionally exposing himself to it (he had it narrowed down to 2 species and needed to know if it was the one that would infect humans) (it was)
#newton geiszler#unscientific aside#drifting with a kaiju is on a whole different level of dangerous. but still.#he's an expert on them. he knew (thought he knew) what he was doing#can also confirm from personal experience that hermann is extremely accurate as a mathematician#like theres a whole range of personalities in mathematics so that part is just 'hes believable as an eccentric academic'#but mathematicians have A Thing about chalkboards#90% of the math profs i had used chalkboards and the 10% who didnt have chalkboards used powerpoint slides#cant remember seeing anyone use dry erase boards except one poor TA who had to fill in one time and was STRUGGLING#well and profs from my non-math classes#also if you ask math people why they like math i think roughly half of them will say something about the beauty of the universe#also his exhausted sigh when pentecost says 'i need more than a prediction' lmao. buddy i have BEEN there#oh and the fact that they have him doing some computer modeling & that he wrote code for the jaegers#extremely overlapping disciplines. i had mandatory computer science courses alongside algebra and stats and all that#& you need to be able to write at least a little code to do the predictive model stuff hes doing#anyway yeah i love them. best eccentric scientists#ask to tag#parasites

just realized that i never mentioned that i know how to code websites and vaguely know how to code in C because i took a class from Harvard, as well as classes at my university
in case you're interested in learning HTML and CSS, my web design class literally gave us these websites to use because it has almost everything:
CSS Tricks - An entire website just for CSS
HTML Tutorial - A webpage about HTML
CSS Tutorial - A webpage about CSS
Markup Validator - Makes sure your code is right
also, i recommend using Visual Studio (if you have Windows) or Visual Studio Code (if you have anything other than Windows, or if you want to do more than just HTML)
#random#random thoughts#thought this was cool to know about me#fun fact about me#ig#and honestly#coding in html and css is literally so easy#i first learned in a computer class in middle school and i made a whole ass website#i highly recommend html for anyone that wants to start learning more about computer languages#although i always found css to be a bit more difficult to figure out#but i think that is just a me problem#html#html css#htmlcoding#html5#css#html5 css3#frontend#code
